Richard “Dick” Owen Sugrue

Aug. 21, 1941 – March 3, 2026

Richard Sugrue, age 84, of Summit, died peacefully on March 3, 2026. Known for his quick wit—until the very end—he brought humor and a kind spirit to all interactions.

He was born in Mansfield, Minnesota to Gerald and Doris Sugrue (nee Madson) and was a lifelong resident of Waukesha County. He and his late brother, Michael, grew up in Pewaukee where their parents served as the chef and baker, respectively, at Oakton Manor, a former resort on Pewaukee Lake. Dick met Major League Baseball (MLB) players who stayed at the resort when in town to play the Milwaukee Braves.

Dick served in the U.S. Army, worked as a Teamster laborer and ended his working life by running his own lawn mowing service for over 20 years.

He had a lifelong love of sports, whether attending, watching or listening on the radio, and especially cherished attending with his children, Packer and Brewer games and road trips to MLB stadiums. An avid reader, Dick found joy and curiosity in newspapers and books, and enjoyed listening to the radio, a pastime that connected him to viewpoints, music, and the world. His fascination with trains reflected his appreciation for history, craftsmanship, and times gone by. He loved taking the round-trip Amtrak Empire Builder route between Milwaukee and Seattle.

Above all, he cherished time with his family. His children and grandchildren were the great pride of his life. Dear father of the late Timothy Sugrue, Steven (Lisa) Sugrue, Suzanne (Peter) Weslow, and loving grandfather to Marissa Sugrue, Hannah Sugrue, Claire Sugrue, Olivia Weslow and Tanner Sugrue. Further, he is survived by other relatives and friends.

Gentle in spirit and generous at heart, he leaves a legacy of love, humor, and kindness that will be remembered fondly.

Richard will be laid to rest at a private, family graveside service at Prairie Home Cemetery in Waukesha.
