Dr. Paul L. Rempe, PhD
April 6, 1942 — March 11, 2026
A Life of Discovery and Teaching
Dr. Paul L. Rempe, a devoted educator, historian, and beloved family man, passed away on March 11, 2026. Paul spent his life proving that history wasn’t just found in dusty books, but in the world around us.
Paul earned his PhD from SUNY Stonybrook and dedicated his professional life to education. He possessed the rare gift of the "true teacher"—the ability to take complex historical events and translate them into stories that resonated with everyone, whether they were in a lecture hall or sitting around a dinner table. This ability led to his taking over Carroll College’s exchange program with the University of Nottingham, making sure British students got a taste of Americana. His commitment to preserving history was most evident in the book he authored, which chronicled his father’s life as well as his experiences during World War I.
The Great Traveler
To Paul, every road was a classroom. He was a renowned traveler who believed that no journey was complete without a stop at a historical highway marker. Whether he was towing a camper across the vast landscapes of the United States or exploring the cities of Europe with family or students, Paul’s curiosity never waned. His adventurous spirit even took him to Brazil to witness the energy of the World Cup, a testament to his lifelong love of the "beautiful game."
A Coach and Dad
Closer to home, Paul’s greatest role was as the cornerstone of his family. He was a constant presence on the sidelines or even in the dugout, coaching tee-ball and never missing a game. He was famously the "ultimate utility player"—if a neighborhood game had uneven teams, no matter the sport, Paul was the first to jump in to ensure everyone could play. Summers were defined by family swims at Buchner Pool and trips to Peter or Oma’s house for games or walks in the woods. These moments created everlasting memories.
Family and Legacy
Paul’s legacy of intellectual curiosity and kindness lives on through those he loved most. He was predeceased by his father Leonhard, his mother Catherine (nee Bach) and his brother Peter. He is survived by his devoted wife, Kathy (nee Mulvaney); his three sons, Tim (Tricia), Jon, and Ben; and his sister, Mia (Jim). He was the proud grandfather to Connor, Lauren, Ian, Carson, Parker, Alexis, and Sawyer, all of whom will carry forward his stories and his sense of adventure.
Paul’s family would like to thank Jolene Cotton and the staff of ProHealth Hospice Care as well as Cathy at Randle-Dable-Brisk funeral home and all friends and extended family who have provided support and meals during this time
