Dr. Ted C. Michaud

Ted C. Michaud, former professor of biology at Carroll College, and a resident of Avalon Square in Waukesha Wisconsin, died at the age of 83 on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 after a long illness. Ted was born October 5, 1929 in Fort Wayne, Indiana to Ruth (nee Hefner) Michaud and Howard Michaud. Ted married Jean Helen (Mackenzie) Michaud on Sept. 10, 1955 in London, Ontario, at the United Church of Canada. Jean was a registered nurse, having studied at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where she met Ted, who was a graduate student and teaching assistant at the University of Michigan. Jean died on Thursday, July 7, 2011, at her home at Avalon Square at the age of 80.
Ted is survived by his sons Michael (and wife Gail) Michaud of Holland, MI and David (and wife Amparo) Michaud of Philadelphia, PA, and his daughter Susan (and husband William) Lieven of Milwaukee. Ted was the proud grandfather of Spencer Michaud of Ann Arbor, Michigan; Amanda and Adriana Michaud of Massachusetts; Samantha and James Lieven of Milwaukee, and Kris Diehl of Caledonia, Michigan. He was the great-grandfather of Sofie Nepiuk, and Evan William Diehl and Ella Ann Diehl.
Ted received his BS degree in 1951 from Purdue University, his MS degree from the University of Michigan in 1954, and his Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Texas in 1959. Ted joined Carroll College in 1959 as Professor of Biology and retired in 1994.
Ted was elected National President of the Beta Beta Beta (Tri-Beta), a National Biological Society, in 1993 and served to 1995. Ted joined Tri Beta in 1964 and had served as Advisor to Mu Chapter, Director of the North Central District 1972-1976, North Central Regional Vice President 1976-1993 and in 2002, Ted was selected an Honorary Member of Tri-Beta for distinguished service.
Ted also served as President of AMBCT Association of Midwest Biology Teachers (ACUBE)
Ted served in the US Army from 1951 (active duty 1951-1953) to his retirement in 1984 as a Colonel.
Ted was an avid bird watcher and participated for many years in annual bird counts with the Benjamin F. Goss Bird Club in Waukesha Wisconsin. Ted carved and painted several birds and ducks over the years and has left his collection to his family.
Ted’s love of music began when he was a member of the Pi Kappa Phi Biological Fraternity at Purdue University. Ted sang with his Pi Kappa Phi brothers in the Purdue Glee Club, touring post-war Europe. Ted continued to perform music throughout his career by singing in the choir at First Presbyterian Church in Waukesha Wisconsin; singing in a barbershop group of 60 men, and singing in a quartet of four biology professors. As a resident of Avalon Square, he frequently entertained the residents by playing harmonica accompanying Judith Williams on guitar.
Visitation will be held on Friday, March 15th, 2013 from 9:30AM until the 11:30AM funeral service at First Presbyterian Church, 810 N. East Avenue, Waukesha, WI. Reverend Nicole Farley will preside. Graveside services will follow at Prairie Home Cemetery with full military honors. A second memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at 1:00PM at Avalon Square, 222 Park Place, Waukesha, WI 53186.
