He was born July 28, 1918 in Petersburg, VA.  The only child of Louis and Eloise (Jordan) Wellford. After graduating from Petersburg High School he attended the University of Virginia until he entered the US Army.  Serving four years he was discharged in December 1945.  On August 26, 1944 while stationed at Ft. Lewis, Washington he married in the post chapel, Miriam Youmans who survives him.
