Lois Mae Kaplan

Lois Mae Kaplan, of Waukesha, died on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at Waukesha Memorial Hospital at the age of 93. She was born in Madison, WI on July 19, 1921 the daughter of Stanley and Cecelia (nee Gesme) Jacobson and grew up in Mt. Horeb, WI. Lois graduated from Vernon Teachers College then earned her Master’s degree from UW-Whitewater in Library Science. She started her career as a teacher and then as a librarian at Ethan Allen School in Wales and then at Nathan Hale High School in West Allis. Lois was an animal lover and raised Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. She was an avid Milwaukee Brewers, Green Bay Packer and UW-Whitewater fan. Lois embraced her Norwegian heritage and loved Norwegian food. She will always be remembered for her caring heart and her generosity to animal welfare, military and conservation causes.

She will be sadly missed by her sisters, Alice (the late Arnold) Cook of Waukesha and Dorothy (the late William) Gummer of Plainfield, IN, her sister-in-law Gertrude Berger of Joplin, MO and her nieces and nephews, William (Sherry) Gummer, Donald (Meryl) Gummer, Richard (Shirley) Gummer, Steve Gummer, Mark (Tobi) Gummer, Jack Gummer, Michael (Mary) Cook, Dr. David (Elizabeth) Cook, Paul (Lin) Cook, Janet (fiancé Ken Gardner) Nixon, Eric (Lauralee) Cook and Ellen (Ken) Vandenberg. She is further survived by many great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, great-great nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Sam Kaplan in 1995, by her brother Lt. Donald Jacobson and by an infant brother and infant sister.

A time for visiting and fellowship will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2014 from 11:00AM until 1:00PM at the Randle-Dable-Brisk Funeral Home, 1110 S. Grand Ave., Waukesha. Burial will be held at a later date at Mt. Horeb Union Cemetery. Memorials are appreciated to the Humane Animal Welfare Society (HAWS), 701 Northview Road, Waukesha, WI 53188 or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
