Lamar E. Kuhlman

April 28, 1922 — August 3, 2018

Lamar E. Kuhlman passed away quietly on Friday, August 3, 2018 at the age of 96. Lamar was born in Wauzeka, Wisconsin on April 28, 1922. He moved with his parents, Frank and Mabel Kuhlman, to Janesville where he graduated Janesville High School in 1940. It was here that he met his future bride, Rosemary Skelly. With the advent of World War II, Lamar joined the Air Transport Command, serving three years in C-47 and B-24 aircraft in the China-Burma-India theater. He later wrote a memoir of his war service including his own drawings and photographs. Lamar and Rosemary married in 1945 and had three daughters, Christine, Karen and Beth. The family lived in Janesville and Muskegon, Michigan, settling in Waukesha in 1963. Lamar was a wood interiors designer for churches, restaurants and private homes. He worked on Milwaukee’s Grain Exchange Room restoration project.

Lamar was a life-long golfer, not hanging up his clubs until into his 90’s! He was often seen at Moor Downs Golf Course in Waukesha. He was also a talented ice-skater, drawing fancy floral patterns in the ice at Goose Island rink in Janesville. Lamar was a great reader and patron of the Waukesha Public Library and also loved crossword puzzles. Recently he wrote short stories while a resident of Brookfield Highlands senior apartments where he enjoyed the social gatherings, especially Happy Hour!

Lamar is survived by daughters Christine Traeger of Waukesha and Karen Kuhlman of Oconomowoc. He is further survived by his grandchildren Andrew (Renee) Traeger of Waukesha, Francine (Greg Joram) Traeger of Cedarburg and Victoria Moore of San Diego; great-grandchildren Arwen and A.J. Traeger of Waukesha; son-in-law J. Chris (Elizabeth) Moore of Florida; and sister-in-law Jean McCann of Janesville. Lamar was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Rosemary, his daughter Elizabeth Joyce Moore and his son-in-law Thomas C. Traeger.

Lamar led an active life, working until the age of 80, driving to the age of 95 and golfing almost to the end.

Per Lamar’s request, no formal services will be held. Burial will take place at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Janesville. Memorials in Lamar’s name are appreciated to the Waukesha Public Library, 321 Wisconsin Ave. Waukesha, WI 53186 or any veterans organizations.
