Alan Wetherbee Thompson

March 2, 1941 — January 6, 2014

Alan Wetherbee Thompson, of the town of Vernon, died on Monday, January 6, 2014 following heart surgery at age 72. Alan was born in Newton, Massachusetts on March 2, 1941 the son of Harlan and Priscilla (nee Johnson) Thompson and grew up in Pleasantville, New York. He earned a BA degree in Chemistry from Long Island University (then CW Post) and a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh. He did post doctorate work at Pennsylvania State University, Oregon State University and University of Nebraska. Alan worked in the Geology Department of Memorial University in St. John’s Newfoundland from 1975 until 1977. He then worked in the Chemistry Department at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee from 1978 until 2011.

Alan was a member and librarian of the Waukesha Choral Union, a member of Vernon Presbyterian Church Choir and Carroll Bibliophiles. He was a world traveler and enjoyed world culture. He loved live theater, classical music and singing. Above all, he enjoyed being with his family.

His family and many friends will sorely miss him. Alan is survived by his wife Linda, his three children Douglas Thompson, Susan Mullally and Becky Thompson and four grandchildren Zack, Adina and Shira Thompson and Patrick Mullally. He is further survived by his two sisters Martha Nester and Carol DeCoster along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his sister Beth Sarles in 2012.

Services will be held at Vernon Presbyterian Church, S71 W23280 National Avenue, Big Bend, WI 53103 on Saturday, January 11, 2014. Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 3:00PM with a Service of Remembrance at 3:00PM. Reverend Henry Hanna will preside. A private family committal will be held at Prairie Home Cemetery in Waukesha. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Waukesha Choral Union, PO Box 495 Waukesha, WI 53187 or to Vernon Presbyterian Church.
